Retrospectives and other new features

We've added some great new features in Scrumwise:

  • You can now create retrospectives, in the new "Retrospectives" tab, to take a look at how something went, such as a sprint. For more info, see here.
  • You can now import backlog items from CSV files. To do this, click an "Add a backlog item" button, and then "Import items" at the bottom of the dialog. For more info, see here.
  • We've added a new settings popup in some of the tabs, to make it easy to access those of your personal settings that are most useful in that tab. To open it, click the cogwheel icon in the upper left corner of the tab, for example in the "Backlog" or "Task board" tabs.
  • You can now get much more information shown on cards in task boards and Kanban boards. For example, the due date, the number of comments, or the number of checked items in checklists. You can configure this in the new settings popup in the "Task board" and "Kanban" tabs, or in your personal settings page.
  • We've added a new "Quick add" feature, to make it easy to quickly add backlog items and tasks. To use it, click the "Quick add" button next to the normal add button, where it's available. Then enter the name of a new backlog item or task, and press Enter. You can also include estimates. For example, if you enter "Example backlog item 4 days", the "4 days" will become the estimate.
  • We've made it easier to switch between backlog lists in the "Releases", "Sprints", and "Kanban" tabs. You can now get a button shown for each backlog list, by checking the option "Select backlog lists using buttons" in the new settings popup, or in your personal settings page. Also, there are now previous / next buttons for cycling through the backlog lists.

We've also added a number of other improvements various places.

We hope you'll like the new features and improvements. As always, if you have any questions or comments, let us know.

Custom fields and copy between projects

We've now added full support for custom fields in Scrumwise. Custom fields are fields that you define yourself, to represent information that doesn't fit naturally in the existing fields in Scrumwise. For example, you could add a "Platform" field to bug backlog items, where you can specify which platform the bug occurs on. For more info, see here.

We've also made it possible to copy backlog items between projects. Yes, finally! For more info, see here.

And we've also added some other features and improvements:

  • You can now expand or collapse the epics assigned to a specific release, in the "Releases" tab, by clicking the expand/collapse icons in the upper right corner of the release.
  • You can now filter on which Kanban board a backlog item is assigned to, when using filters in the "Backlog" tab.
  • You can now use saved checklists in messages, in the "Messages" tab.
  • You can now mention files and folders, using the @-notation.
  • We've improved the search fields, such that the order of the words no longer matters.
  • We've added new functionality to the Scrumwise API, including 14 new methods. For more info, see here.

We hope you'll like the new features and improvements. If you have any questions or comments, let us know.

Easier collaboration and other new features

We've added three all-new tabs and two new features in Scrumwise that make it easier to collaborate in your teams:

  • We've added a new "Messages" tab that you can use to post announcements, questions, ideas, to-do lists, etc. to the people working on a project. To show the tab, click the "More" button at the right side of the tabs, and select the "Messages" checkbox.
  • We've added a new "Chat" tab that you can use for group chats with the people working on a project. The chat messages are visible to everyone with access to the project. To show the tab, click the "More" button at the right side of the tabs, and select the "Chat" checkbox.
  • We've added a new "Files" tab that you can use for storing and sharing files in a project. You can use folders to organize your files, and discuss them using comments. To show the tab, click the "More" button at the right side of the tabs, and select the "Files" checkbox.
  • We've added in-app notifications, so that you can get notified directly inside Scrumwise about what's happening that's relevant to you. To see your notifications, click the bell icon in the upper right corner of the page.
  • You can now watch backlog items, tasks, and various other objects to keep track of what's happening to them. When you watch an object, you'll get notifications about everything that happens in that object. For more info, see here.

We've also added more than 20 other features and improvements, including the following:

  • You can now set default estimates for new backlog items and tasks. For example, if most of your backlog items have an estimate of 1 day, you can set this as the default estimate, to avoid having to enter it every time you create a new backlog item. For more info, see here.
  • We've added 7 new options to configure how cards look in task boards and Kanban boards. You can now control how cards are sized, and hide information that you don't need. You can find the new options in the "Cards" section in your personal settings.
  • We've added a lot of new functionality to the Scrumwise API, with 20 new methods, new objects, and new properties. For more info, see here.
  • You can now export backlog items and tasks together in one single operation, to the clipboard and CSV files. For more info, see here.
  • When you export backlog items and tasks, you can now get creation dates and dates of status changes included in the export. To do so, enable the option "Include dates when exporting backlog items and tasks" in your personal settings. Note that the dates are only available for creations and changes that happen after this option was introduced.
  • You can now create a deep link URL to a backlog item or task using just the number of the backlog item or task. For more info, see here.
  • You can now export a list of your projects. To do so, go to the "Projects" tab, select the projects, and select "Export these projects" in the right-click menu.
  • You can now choose to always see the detailed estimate on epics, instead of either the rough or detailed estimate. This is an option in your personal settings.
  • You can now get the assigned persons included in the copy when copying backlog items and tasks. This is an option in your personal settings.
  • You can now receive the results from the Scrumwise API in compressed format, to reduce bandwidth usage. For more info, see here.

Finally, we've given our subscription management system a big upgrade. If you're on a yearly subscription, you can now manage your subscription from inside Scrumwise, in the "Your company account" tab in the settings. You can renew your subscription, switch to another subscription, add more users, and request quotes. Also, you can now pay for a yearly subscription using a credit card registered inside Scrumwise, instead of via PayPal. Note that we will gradually move customers on yearly subscriptions to this new subscription system, so you may not yet see your yearly subscription inside Scrumwise.

We hope you'll like the new features and improvements. If you have any questions or comments, let us know.

Bug tracking, relationships, and other new features

We've now added full support for bug tracking in Scrumwise. Like before, a bug is represented as a backlog item of type "Bug", but we've added a lot of new functionality for handling bugs, to cover everything you need in a typical bug tracking workflow. For more info, see here.

We've also made it possible to add relationships between backlog items, tasks, releases, and sprints. For example, you can now add a relationship between two backlog items specifying that one of them must be done before the other. For more info, see here.

We've also added a lot of other new features:

  • You can now set WIP (Work-In-Progress) limits for each column in a task board or Kanban board. WIP limits help you control the flow of work through the board, by limiting the amount of work that can be in a column at any given time. If there is more work than this, a warning will be shown. For more info, see here.
  • You can now filter task boards and Kanban boards using saved filters created in the Backlog tab. These filters are now available in the "Show" dropdown in the "Task board" and "Kanban" tabs, allowing you to filter which backlog items to show in the board.
  • You can now archive sprints, to move old sprints out of the way and avoid clutter. For more info, see here.
  • In the Time tab, you can now view tracked time across all projects, instead of only for the current project. To do this, select "All projects" in the upper right corner of the Time tab.
  • You can now work on backlog items without having to assign them to a sprint or Kanban board. For example, this is useful when you're fixing bugs and don't want to assign the bugs to a sprint or Kanban board.
  • In the "Add a tag" dropdown, you can now narrow down the list of shown tags by typing part of the tag name.
  • You can now copy the number of a backlog item or task to the clipboard by clicking on the number in the popup dialog for the backlog item or task, or by right-clicking and selecting "Copy to clipboard".
  • When a text is truncated, you can now see the full text by hovering the mouse over the text.
  • You can now add sprints via the API, using the addSprint() method.
  • You can now assign backlog items to sprints via the API, using the assignBacklogItemToSprint() method.
  • You can now get the file contents of an attachment via the API, using the getAttachmentFileContents() method.

Finally, we've made a number of performance optimizations to improve responsiveness when you have a large number of backlog items in a project. Things should now be considerably faster in such projects, otherwise please let us know. To get the full benefit of these performance improvements, make sure to use the HTML version of Scrumwise.

We hope you'll like the new features and improvements. If you have any questions or comments, let us know.

December 2, 2017

Epics and other new features

We've now added full support for epics in Scrumwise. An epic is a backlog item that contains other backlog items. For example, you can use epics to represent high-level features that your stakeholders understand, or to represent goals or themes across your backlog items.

Epics behave very much like other backlog items. You can place epics wherever you want in the backlog, either among your other backlog items, or in dedicated backlogs and backlog lists that you create for this. Epics can also contain other epics, so you can have nesting down to any level.

For more info on epics, see here.

We've also added some other features:

  • You can now mention someone in a comment, using Twitter-style @-notation. When you mention someone, the person will get notified. You can also mention a team, to notify all team members. And you can mention specific backlog items, tasks, sprints, or releases, as a way to include a reference to those in a comment. For more info, see here.
  • You can now configure whether a copy of a backlog item or task should have "Copy of" added to its name. For example, if you have some backlog items that you use as templates and copy from, it is often useful to not have "Copy of" added. For more info, see here.
  • You can now configure whether Scrumwise should add an extra task when you add the first task to a backlog item that has already been estimated. Depending on how you work, and when you estimate backlog items, you may not want this extra task added. For more info, see here.

We hope you'll like the new features. If you have any questions or comments, let us know.

Easier backlog management and other new features

We've made it much easier to manage your backlog in Scrumwise. You can now organize a backlog into multiple lists of backlog items, shown side by side. For example, you could have a backlog list per feature category, such as user interface, business logic, administration, and bugs. You can also have multiple backlogs in the same project, each with its own backlog lists. For example, you could have a backlog per subproject, application module, or client. Or, a backlog for future stuff that you haven't organized yet. For more info on backlog management, see here.

We've also added some other improvements:

  • When you create a new backlog item or task, you can now add tags directly in the creation dialog, instead of having to open the backlog item or task afterwards to do it.
  • You can now filter the unassigned backlog items shown in the Releases tab, Sprints tab, and Kanban tab. You can use saved filters that you've created in the Backlog tab, or filter by release. You'll see the filter option when you have saved filters or releases in the project. To create saved filters, see here.
  • In dropdowns that show a list of persons, such as in the "Assigned to" field in a backlog item, the persons are now grouped according to their role in the project. This makes it easier to find the right person if you have a larger number of people in the project. You'll see the grouping if you have more than a few people in a project, and have created one or more teams.

We hope you'll like the new features. There's more great stuff coming this year! If you have any questions or comments, let us know.

New look, new website, new features

As you've maybe already seen, we've given Scrumwise a big visual update. We've updated the look of Scrumwise itself, and completely redesigned our website and logo.

We've also added a number of new features and improvements:

  • You can now create checklists in Scrumwise, for example in backlog items. This is useful for things like acceptance criteria, requirements, to-do lists, etc. For more info, see here.
  • You can now set a color on backlog items and tasks. You can either select a color directly, or let the color be determined by the tags on the backlog items and tasks. For more on this, see here.
  • We've added expand/collapse support lots of places. For example, you can now collapse a column in a task board, such as the Done column, to make more room for the other columns. Look for the small expand/collapse icons, or use the right-click menu.
  • You can now search across projects, using the search icon next to the project selection dropdown in the upper right corner of Scrumwise. This makes it easy to jump directly to a backlog item, task, sprint, comment, etc., regardless of which project it is located in.
  • You can now use AND, OR, and NOT to combine filter criteria when filtering in the Backlog tab.
  • You can now assign backlog items to sprints using the right-click menu.
  • When you add an image attachment, you can now see a preview of the image before adding it.
  • We've improved the export to CSV with better control of line breaks and separator. The default settings should work well, but you can change them in your personal account page in the settings.
  • When you export time logs, the tags on the backlog items and tasks are now included in the export.
  • We've improved the keyboard shortcuts in dropdowns.
  • In the HTML version of Scrumwise, you can now export directly from Scrumwise to Excel using copy/paste, instead of having to export to CSV first. For more info, see here.
  • In the HTML version of Scrumwise, you can now copy comments made by other people regardless of your administrator status. Either double-click on the comment, or click the "Copy" link.
  • In the HTML version of Scrumwise, if you're using Chrome or Firefox, you can now paste an image directly from the clipboard when attaching a file. Just open the "Attach a file" dialog and press Ctrl+V / Cmd+V.

We hope you’ll like the new look, new website, and new features. If you have any questions or comments, let us know.

iOS & Android apps now available

We’re happy to announce that we now have Scrumwise apps for iOS and Android available in the App Store and Google Play.

Although you can already run Scrumwise in the browser on iOS and Android, we highly recommend using the apps instead. The user interface is the same, but the overall experience is significantly better with the apps. They are ideal for use on iPad and Android tablets, but are also useful on your phone to get a quick look at your task board or burndown, or add a backlog item to your backlog.

To get the apps, search for "Scrumwise" in the App Store or Google Play, or use these links:

App Store
Google Play

For Android, we recommend installing the Android System Webview component, to ensure you have the newest version of Chrome available.

We hope you’ll like the apps. If you have any questions or comments, let us know.

HTML5 & mobile support

We’ve released a new version of Scrumwise that completes a very important project for us: Moving Scrumwise from Flash to HTML5, and adding support for mobile devices.

It has been a huge project, and has taken more than a year, but we are extremely happy with the result. We are now fully HTML5-based, and we run on mobile devices. This gives us a great platform for the future development of Scrumwise.

To those of you who have been waiting for us to add other features: Sorry to keep you waiting, but we felt this was the time to get this transition done, so that we no longer depend on Flash. Thanks a lot for your patience.

We have big plans for the future of Scrumwise, and we’re going to add a lot of new functionality in the coming years, now that we have our new foundation in place.

Here’s what this release contains in more detail:

  • HTML5 version completed: The HTML5 version of Scrumwise is now officially out of beta and ready for full production use. HTML5 is now our primary platform, and new users will automatically get the HTML5 version if their browser supports it. To select which version to use, see here.
  • Much improved mobile support: We’ve made a lot of improvements and adjustments that result in a much improved experience when running in the browser on iOS and Android.
  • Performance improvements: We’ve made some performance improvements that mean faster startup and faster project switching.
  • Improvements to Scrumwise API: We’ve added a couple of improvements in the Scrumwise API, see here.

We hope you like the new release. If you have any questions or comments, let us know.

October 24, 2015

The HTML5 version is now available

The HTML5 version of Scrumwise is now available! It’s officially still in beta, but it’s very robust, and it’s safe for use in your daily work. Right now, it may still be a bit slower than the Flash version in some cases, but we’re working on that. Here is how to try it.

May 2, 2015

We’re working on the HTML5 version

Just a quick update from us: It’s been a while since we’ve added new features in Scrumwise, but there’s a good reason for that: We’re working full-speed on moving all of Scrumwise to HTML5.

We’re very far with this, and have the HTML5 version up and running internally. It’s the full Scrumwise as you know it, running in pure HTML5, without any need for Flash.

There’s still some work left, but we expect to make the HTML5 version available in the near future. In the meantime, thank you for your patience

New features

We’ve added new features and improvements in Scrumwise:

  • You can now link directly to backlog items, tasks, comments, and almost any other object in Scrumwise. Yes, finally! Also, email notifications from Scrumwise now include a link to the relevant object. And the browser history now works as you would expect.
  • We’ve added a lot of flexibility in how backlog items with tasks are estimated. For example, you can now decide to not estimate tasks at all, and use the number of done tasks in a backlog item to determine its progress. For more on this, see here.
  • You can now have more than one ongoing sprint in the same project. For example, each of your teams can now work in their own sprint, out of sync with the other teams.
  • When you add the first task to a backlog item, Scrumwise now automatically adds an additional task if necessary. This way, the estimate and progress of the backlog item is not lost.
  • You can now set due dates on backlog items and tasks. You can also filter on due dates in the Backlog tab, for example to see backlog items and tasks that are overdue. Due dates are optional, and you can turn them on in the settings of a project.
  • You can now configure the width and color of each column in a task board or Kanban board. For example, if you have a column for blocked cards, you can make that column red, and make it narrow in width (since it will typically contain fewer cards than the other columns).

We hope you’ll like the new features and improvements. If you have any questions or comments, let us know.

New Kanban support and configurable columns in task boards

We’ve added new features in Scrumwise. First, you can now use Kanban. This means that you can work on backlog items and tasks without using sprints. It’s like working in a Scrum task board, but without the sprints. Here’s what you can do:

  • Design your own Kanban boards, with columns that match your workflow.
  • Move backlog items directly into Kanban boards, without using sprints.
  • Work on backlog items and tasks in Kanban boards, like you would do in a Scrum task board.
  • Archive completed backlog items in Kanban boards.

You can mix Scrum and Kanban freely in each project. For more on the Kanban support, see here.

We’ve also made it possible to configure the columns in your Scrum task boards. For more on this, see here.

There’s also a number of other minor improvements.

We hope you’ll like the new features and improvements. If you have any questions or comments, let us know.

December 14, 2013

New release planning support

We’ve added full support for release planning in Scrumwise. You can use it to do long-term planning across sprints. Here’s what you can do:

  • Define releases.
  • Assign backlog items to releases.
  • Predict release dates using expected velocities.
  • View release burnup charts, including predicted burn.
  • See if a release is on track or not, and adjust its contents.
  • Filter by release in the Backlog page.

For more info on release planning, see here.

We’ve also added a number of other minor improvements.

We hope you’ll like the new features and improvements. If you have any questions or comments, let us know.

August 31, 2013

New features

We’ve added new features and improvements in Scrumwise:

  • In the Sprints tab, you can now see how much work is assigned to each person in a sprint. This makes it easier to plan sprints where some work must be done by specific team members. This is an option in your personal account page in the settings.
  • You can now organize your users into groups, for example by company or department. This makes it easier to manage a large number of users. If you have turned on access control on projects, you can also filter by group in the People tab. To create groups, go to the "All personal accounts" tab in the settings. You must be administrator to do this.
  • You can now search for persons, using the new search field in the People tab and the "All personal accounts" tab. You can also search for backlog items and tasks using the name of the person that they are assigned to.
  • You can now sort persons alphabetically, using the right-click menu. You can sort within a team, a group, and outside of teams and groups.
  • You can now add or remove tags on more than one backlog item, task, or sprint at a time, in one operation, using the right-click menu.
  • You can now search for tags using the search fields, by entering the tag name or parts of it.
  • When you filter on tags in the Backlog page, this now also takes into account tags on tasks.
  • You can now get email notifications when file attachments are added. This is an option in your personal account page in the settings.
  • Email notifications now include the name of the project, and optionally also the item numbers and tasks numbers. The item and task numbers are included if you have turned on showing of item numbers, in your personal account page in the settings.
  • Scrumwise can now get a person’s photo from Gravatar. If you haven’t added a photo of a person, and the person has an image on Gravatar, Scrumwise will automatically use that.
  • If you have turned on access control on projects, you can now give people access to a project using the right-click menu.

Also, we’ve completely redesigned our website from scratch. Among other things, it now includes a support page and this blog.

We hope you’ll like the new features and improvements. If you have any questions or comments, let us know.

May 11, 2013

New API

We’ve added an easy-to-use API in Scrumwise. It allows you to access and modify your data in Scrumwise using straightforward HTTP requests.

You can find the API documentation here.

We hope you’ll like the API. If you have any questions or comments, let us know.

March 2, 2013

New features

We’ve added new features and improvements in Scrumwise:

  • The Sprints tab is now much more useful during a sprint. It shows you if a team is ahead or behind right now, and makes it easy to change the work assigned to the team to match the remaining time available in the team.
  • You can now search for backlog items and tasks in the Sprints tab and the Task board tab, too.
  • Backlog items now have an optional priority field. You can turn it on in the settings of a project.
  • The backlog item numbers/ids can now be shown on backlog items. This is an option in your personal account page in the settings.
  • It is now easier to assign backlog items and tasks to a person. For example, you can select one or more backlog items or tasks and use the right-click menu to assign them to a person, in one operation.
  • When you delete a person, all historic information about that user is now kept. This includes which backlog items and tasks were assigned to the user, which comments the user wrote, etc.

There’s also a number of other minor improvements.

We hope you’ll like the new features and improvements. If you have any questions or comments, let us know.

January 19, 2013

New access control on projects

We’ve added new features in Scrumwise:

  • You can now control who can access each project. For example, this is useful if you want to give your customers or other stakeholders access to Scrumwise, and only want them to see their own project. For more info, see here.
  • The links are now clickable in the "What’s happening" box in the Overview page, and in the activity histories everywhere else.

We hope you’ll like the new features. If you have any questions or comments, let us know.

November 10, 2012

New features

We’ve added new features in Scrumwise:

  • You can now integrate to GitHub, and include information for Scrumwise in your commit messages. For more info, see here.
  • You can now specify the available time that a team has in a sprint individually for each day, instead of as a total for the sprint. This makes it easy to handle vacations, non-work days, changes in availability of team members, work in weekends, etc.
  • Backlog items and tasks now keep their progress info when you unassign them from sprints. This makes it easy to unassign a partially complete backlog item from a sprint and continue the work in a later sprint, without losing any info about the state of the backlog item or tasks. For more info, see here.
  • You can now move backlog items and tasks to the To Test column without their progress being set to 100%. This is useful if the testing takes time, and this time is included in the estimates. This is an option in the project settings.
  • You can now add external links in backlog items, tasks, projects, and sprints. For example, you can link to a bug report in a bug tracking system, or to an external wiki page for a project. The link fields are optional and are turned on in the project settings. For more info, see here.
  • In the backlog page, you can now move backlog items to the top or bottom of the backlog using actions in the right-click menu.
  • You can now select which number format to use when exporting using copy & paste, and to CSV files. For more info, see here.

There’s also a number of other minor improvements and additions.

We hope you’ll like the new features and improvements. If you have any questions or comments, let us know.

August 18, 2012

We’ve added new features and improvements in Scrumwise:

  • You can now get email notifications about events that interest you, such as when somebody replies to a comment of yours or assigns work to you.
  • Projects can now be archived.
  • You can now filter the task board to show just yourself, your team, or a specific person.

We hope you’ll like the new features and improvements. If you have any questions or comments, let us know.
